Art Deco style in the heart of Paris

2 12 2009

Finding a good hotel in Paris can be difficult; the city has traditionally been littered with old-fashioned two- and three-star properties with a smattering of luxury palaces such as the George V, providing few options for those searching for budget accommodation without compromising on style. Recently, though, the city has begun to spawn a new generation of smaller boutique hotels offering beautiful design at low prices.

The Hotel Aviatic – my base during my recent Paris trip – is one such option. Located in the heart of the sixth arrondissement between St Germain-des-Prés and Montparnasse, it combines a sense of history with warm, inviting design, while a wide range of nearby metro stations provide easy access to all parts of the city and the main transport hubs.

Hotel Aviatic, Paris

The former townhouse became a hotel in 1912, when aviators from the nearby Issy-les-Moulineaux airfield stayed in the building and gave it its name. It later provided accommodation for the many artists and writers who passed through St Germain and Montparnasse during the twentieth century.

Recently renovated, the hotel is now clad in warm reds, pinks and muted greys, with striped walls and Chinese fabrics. Its elegant interior blends Art Deco style and a touch of glamour with comforts such as squashy armchairs and piles of cushions, while the rooms – though tiny – offer blissfully comfortable beds, plasma TVs, stylish bathrooms and luxury toiletries.

Free drinks and nibbles are set out every evening in the lounge and breakfast is served in the miniscule bistro, whose walls are plastered with posters from Parisian shows and exhibitions. The hotel will also supply a picnic on request – perfect for lazy days in the nearby Jardin de Luxembourg.

My top three ideas for festive breaks

13 11 2009

Christmas decorations at the Galleries Lafayette

This time of year provides the perfect opportunity for a relaxing pre-Christmas getaway before the stress of hectic family get-togethers. Many people flock to the glittering lights of New York or the traditional atmosphere of Germany’s Christmas markets, but there are many other options for those in search of some festive spirit.

Paris

Everyone talks about Paris in the springtime, but I prefer Paris in the winter – particularly around Christmas, when the Champs Elysees are lined with sparkling lights and the windows of famous department store the Galleries Lafayette come alive with animated displays. The city’s shops are perfect for picking up unusual gifts, while the  ice-rink outside the Hôtel de Ville provides wintry fun in a romantic setting overlooking the Seine.

Edinburgh

Fascinating at any time of year, Edinburgh is especially worth a visit in December. As well as the starkly beautiful castle – illuminated at Christmas by a striking lighting scheme – it boasts a huge German market, a fair, an outdoor ice-rink, lively bars and fantastic shopping opportunities.

Edinburgh also offers a wide array of fantastic boutique hotels, of which my favourite for festive breaks is The Bonham in the city’s West End. Set in a converted Victorian town house, it blends contemporary style with luxurious interiors, rich colours and period touches such as huge bay windows, black and white tiled bathrooms and an imposing spiral staircase. The hotel’s restaurant is similarly warm and sophisticated, serving an innovative menu of modern French food with a Scottish twist in a wood-panelled dining room.

The Cotswolds

If you’re looking for a more rural festive escape, the Cotswolds’ picture-perfect stone and thatch villages offer stylish hotels, unusual boutiques and cosy pubs. The area also boasts a growing art, restaurant and spa scene, attracting increasing numbers of celebs to its rolling hills and village greens.

Those searching for all-out luxury should try Lower Slaughter Manor, Cowley Manor or Cotswold House, while the Burford House Hotel – set within a 17th century building on Burford’s High Street – is perfect for those seeking comfort and style on a lower budget. Its eight individually decorated bedrooms are crammed with antiques and luxurious fabrics, while the hotel’s two lounges come complete with roaring fires, an honesty bar and resident cats.

Lux-for-less, Valencian style

The lobby at Hospes Palau de la Mar

Well, I’m back from Valencia and struggling to adapt to the suddenly autumnal British weather after a week of 36°C heat.  There’ll be more on this fantastic city to follow soon, but first I wanted to share another ‘lux-for-less’ hotel option – Hospes Palau de la Mar.

Located along a shady tree-lined avenue in Valencia’s elegant Eixample district, the hotel is housed across two 19th century palaces. It combines striking original features such as a sweeping staircase and intricately carved wooden doors with a sleek marble lobby and a muted, minimalist interior. The atmosphere is airy and understated, with chilled out music and the scent of orange blossom creating a soothing sense of calm as soon as you enter.

The rooms, spread across the original buildings and a modern extension surrounding the hotel’s interior garden, are simply furnished but very large, with wooden floors, heavenly beds and complimentary robes and slippers. They also boast marble bathrooms with enough free toiletries to make taking your own seem like a waste of valuable luggage space.

The hotel encompasses an on-site spa offering a sauna, a steam room, an underground Jacuzzi fed by two miniature waterfalls and a tantalising range of treatments. I opted for a Balinese massage, which combines relaxing aromatherapy with invigorating Thai stretches.

I was equally impressed with the hotel’s Senzone restaurant, which provides an innovative twist on traditional Valencian dishes such as Paella. The accompanying bar is perfect for an after-dinner cocktail and does a great ‘Agua de Valencia’ – vodka and cava with fresh orange juice.

A final note on price – the hotel is not particularly cheap if you book directly and breakfast is not included in the room rate, but we managed to hunt down a great value deal through www.lastminute.com. Perfect for a touch of well-needed pampering without breaking the bank.

A touch of luxury without the five-star budget

The White Room at Hawksmoor House

The White Room at Hawksmoor House

If you’re anything like me, you like to enjoy a taste of the high life but don’t have the budget for five-star hideaways or jet set glamour. But with a bit of research it’s easy to find smaller guesthouses and boutique hotels which offer style and service without the hefty price tag.

Here are a few of my favourite lux-for-less options:

Hawksmoor House, Cape Winelands, South Africa

Occupying a colonial Cape Dutch farmhouse on the Matjieskuil wine estate, Hawksmoor House offers the perfect location for unwinding in peaceful surroundings. You can enjoy breakfasts, home-made afternoon teas or sundowners on the veranda, lounge by the pool or wander the rose-filled gardens while enjoying the view of Table Mountain in the distance. Ask for the White Room – actually a suite with two bedrooms, a dressing room, a terrace and a marble bathroom complete with a walk-in shower and a huge, freestanding bath tub.

79 on Orange, Cape Town

Located in a colonial building at the foot of Table Mountain, this guesthouse boasts warm, African-themed interiors crammed with art and antiques. Each of the five bedrooms is individually styled, with large bathrooms and a terrace. The lavender-filled garden houses a swimming pool and a Jacuzzi, while the homely lounge encompasses comfortable sofas, an open fire, a well-stocked honesty bar and heaps of books.  Best of all are the breakfasts, which include a mouth-watering array of local fruit, together with delicious pastries and fry-ups.

Panorama by Rhombus, Hong Kong

Situated in Kowloon just minutes from the Star Ferry pier, the Panorama has a rooftop garden, a stylish cocktail bar and an elegant, monochrome interior. Try to wangle an upgrade to a superior room located on the upper floors of the 42-storey hotel, as the floor-to-ceiling windows provide stunning views of the Harbour and Hong Kong Island. You won’t want to draw the curtains.

Hotel Le Canberra, Cannes

Hotel Le Canberra was fully refurbished in 2008 and exudes a soothing sense of calm in the heart of the city. Its neoclassical façade hides a retro-chic interior with a touch of 1950s glamour provided by the pink, black and white colour scheme. The outdoor restaurant serves a range of French and Italian cuisine under the shade of palm trees, while beyond lies a small swimming pool surrounded by bamboo and landscaped gardens. You wouldn’t be surprised to see Grace Kelly or Audrey Hepburn wandering the hallways.

Hotel Herodion, Athens

The Herodion offers contemporary glamour just minutes from the spectacular ruins of ancient Athens. The renovated rooms are comfortable and stylishly simple, while the large bar mixes modern furnishings and comfortable sofas with antiques. The hotel also boasts a Japanese-style rooftop garden, complete with Jacuzzis where you can watch the sun set behind the Parthenon as you sip a well-earned glass of wine.
